VITAMIN TABLETS- SHOULD YOU TAKE THEM?
My patients often ask me, “Should we take vitamin tablets?” Or “Is it safe to take vitamin tablets?”
There are times when I prescribe vitamin tablets my patients ask if they can avoid it and maybe try something more natural.
It is true that vitamins and minerals are present in our natural foods. If you are maintaining a healthy and balanced diet then there are very less chances of you developing a deficiency.
However, in today’s world, everyone has a very hectic life. We are not getting proper exercise, food and as a matter of fact even air.
The pollution is at an all-time high. Not just that, 90 percent of the patients who come to me are deficient in vitamin D.
It is believed that around 30 percent of people are deficient in one or more of the most important vitamins and minerals, and for many the risk only increases with age.
Estimates show about 75 percent of people would likely develop nutrient deficiencies if supplemental multivitamins didn’t exist.
The best vitamins include vitamins A, C, D, E, K and B vitamins. In addition to the best vitamins, other nutrients that are important include iron, iodine, magnesium, omega-3 fish oil and calcium.
Risk factors that make a person more likely to have a vitamin or mineral deficiency include:
- eating a highly processed diet
- being vegetarian or vegan
- being underweight or consuming too little calories in general
- being of reproductive age
- being over the age of 65
- having a low socioeconomic status
- a lack of education and living in poverty.
Risk factors for not getting enough of the best vitamins include being vegetarian or vegan, pregnant or over the age of 55.
What happens when you have a deficiency?
Let me make it easier for you to understand. B vitamins include:
- Pantothenic acid (B-5)
- Folic acid(B-9)
These vitamins are necessary for a fully functioning metabolism. The main function of the B vitamins is to help your body metabolize carbohydrates, fats and proteins. So, if you are deficient in any of the above B vitamins, your metabolism will not function properly adding on to your weight and will make it difficult for you to lose weight.
Hence, in this case taking vitamin supplements become an absolute necessity. Not just this, if you are deficient in Vitamin B-12 and you are a vegetarian or vegan, then there is no option apart from taking supplements because vitamin B-12 is not present in any plant products.

Apart from that, Vitamin A, C and D are antioxidants that fight free radical damage. Vitamin K is essential for blood clotting, B vitamins are essential for the proper working of your metabolism and other nutrients like iron, iodine, calcium are also equally important for a healthier and fitter you.
So, what do you take from this? Diet can take care of your deficiencies, however, if you are deficient, vitamin tablets are a must. But, you must take them under guidance of a registered medical practitioner. All the best and keep reading my blogs!
